If a mate suggests doing something that doesn’t fit with your values, it’s OK to say no. If they’re really your friend, they’ll accept your decision. But it can still be really hard to go against what everyone else is doing, so learn how to explain why you don’t want to do something.
- Prepare a good reason in advance so you can be more persuasive
- Make it something you really believe in – it’s got to be genuine
- Keep a level head and calmly tell them why not
- If they try to hassle you, just stick to your line and repeat it.
Often, no-one wants to be the one to stick out – but they might all be thinking the same thing as you. Watch to see if anyone agrees or asks you questions. Maybe talk to them quietly about it later too.
Kia kaha - stay strong!
